Professional experience:  

since 1992: Visiting Scholar at INED (French National Institute of Demographic Studies, Paris) (several months per year) 

Participation in several research projects on population change in Russia and the Soviet Union, in collaboration with A. Monnier and A. Blum. The research topics include fertility, family planning, modelling of age-specific abortion trends, marriage and divorce patterns, modelling of mortality fluctuations, data collection, historical demography. The principal results have been published by INED.

since 1992: Chief of Demographic Developments Laboratory in the Institute for Social and Economic Problems of Population. Russian Academy of Sciences (part-time) 

Heads a small team (two full-time and two part-time research workers) whose task is to provide demographic expertise for the projects undertaken in the Institute and to prepare an annual report on the demographic situation in Russia. This team has constituted a data base of statistics of population change in Russia since 1959.

 since 1996: Senior researcher, Chief of Bibliography and Information Department in the Centre for the Study of Population Problems, Faculty of Economics, Moscow State University (full-time) 

As senior researcher, undertakes studies focusing on historical demography: extraction of demographic data for Russia from 18th and 19th century sources and modelling of population dynamics (mortality, family formation). As Chief of Department, supervises a team of four researchers and three technicians whose tasks are: to prepare and update an annotated bibliography of population-related publications in Russian; to publish a bibliographical bulletin (the first issue was prepared in 1996); to maintain and develop the library of the Centre for Population Studies, Moscow State University; to provide bibliographic assistance for students in demography at this university.

since 1994:

International coordinator, representing the University of Moscow, for the European Union's programme for the teaching of demography (TEMPUS (TACIS)) (European coordinator Professor Guillaume Wunsch), in association with the Universities of Louvain-la-Neuve (G.Wunsch), " La Sapienza " Rome (G. Caselli) and Paris-I (E.Brown).

1990-1996: Senior researcher, Chief of the Department of Population Economics and Socio-Demographic Development, Centre for the Study of Population Problems, Faculty of Economics, Moscow State University (full-time) 

Supervised a staff of 12, including researchers in demography, economy, sociology and geography. Initiated and carried out a variety of studies on population including fertility and mortality analysis, family developments, population health, interregional migration in the USSR and its relationship with socio-economic policy. Supervised projects on fertility, family planning and population projections in the USSR. Conducted studies on socio-economic consequences of population growth and changing population structures. Created (in co-authority) the special programmes on population policy, including all-Union and regional programmes of family support and family planning, made for the USSR Committee for Labour and Social Affairs and the Bureau for Social Development of the USSR Council of Ministers. 

 

1989-1990: Senior researcher, Centre for the Study of Population Problems. Economic Faculty, Moscow State University  

Developed research into the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the effectiveness of population policy and family planning in the USSR. Elaborated methods of analysis and projection for the case of incomplete data on family planning. 

1987-1991:

 Lecturer on "Fertility and Family Planning Policy" at the University of Moscow in the framework of the United Nations programme for specialists from developing countries.

1986-1989: Senior researcher, Department of Human Reproduction, All-Union Research Centre for Mother and Child Health Care.  

Supervised a staff of 7, including researchers in demography, statistics, sociology and psychology. Supervised studies on non-medical aspects of family planning, initiated and carried out sample surveys to study contraception and induced abortion prevalence, elaboration of methodology and questionnaires for similar surveys. Organized field studies in Moscow, Uzbekistan and Turkmenia. 

1984-1986: Researcher, Department of Human Reproduction, All-Union Research Centre for Mother and Child Health Care.  

Collection and analysis of demographic information on family planning in the USSR. Elaboration and conducting of sample socio-demographic surveys. Statistical analysis of data from epidemiological surveys.
